Position allies in January 1917 was a major in the Mediterranean Sea. The last two months of 1916 were marked by a reinforced sinking of merchant ships, and this increase is undoubtedly attributable to an increase of submarine forces of the enemy. The counter-offensive on the subs had little success in the past, the present, and in the future: in 1915, 1 boat was reported as missing; another was sunk in the Black Sea, and two Austrian boat - in the Adriatic; in 1916 four boats were destroyed in the Turkish waters; 1 German and 1 Austrian boat caught while trying to pass the Strait of Otranto, and 1 German and 1 Austrian died in Taranto. Events in 1917 fell short of grim omen of the previous year; Only 2 were destroyed German submarines and missing 1 Austrian boat.
